From Winter Waiting to Spring Growth: Faithful in the Seasons
“Let us not become weary in doing good,
for at the proper time we will reap a harvest
if we do not give up.”
—Galatians 6:9
As winter melts into spring, we are reminded that life has seasons, and so does our faith and our work. Winter has often felt like a season of waiting - a time when seeds we’ve planted are lying quietly beneath the soil. Perhaps we’ve been faithfully sowing: showing up, serving others, praying, and encouraging those around us. Yet much of the growth has been invisible, hidden beneath the surface.
Now spring is here, and with it comes hope. It’s a season where the seeds we planted begin to sprout, where the effort we put in starts to show signs of life. But just as not all seeds sprout at once, not all growth happens at the same pace. Patience and faithfulness are still required. Some shoots will emerge quickly; others take time. We need to trust God with the timing and continue faithfully tending what has been sown.
The story of Jack and the Beanstalk offers a playful but meaningful analogy. Jack’s magic bean grew at incredible speed, quickly spiraling into the sky. Yet at the top, he discovered not only riches but also a scary giant - a challenge he hadn’t anticipated. Growth can happen quickly, but it often comes with surprises and responsibilities. In our lives and in ministry, God’s growth can also be rapid in ways we do not expect, and it may require courage, discernment, and faithful care to navigate what comes with it.
This is where the words of 1 Corinthians 3:6–7 bring comfort:
“I planted the seed, Apollos watered it,
but God has been making it grow.
So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything,
but only God, who makes things grow.”
We are called to plant seeds faithfully, to water them with encouragement, prayer, and practical care, and to celebrate the growth that others contribute to alongside us. But the ultimate work of growth belongs to God. We do not have to force it or control the process. Just as a gardener carefully tends the soil, prunes, and waters, we nurture what we have been given, trusting that God is making it flourish in His timing.
So as we move into this new season, let us hold onto patience, faith, and trust. Let us continue sowing and watering with care, knowing that God is faithful to bring growth - sometimes in surprising ways, sometimes rapidly like Jack’s beanstalk, and sometimes quietly beneath the surface until the proper time. There is joy in seeing sprouting life, and there is hope in knowing that even what seems slow and small is not wasted.
May this spring remind us that growth is happening. May we stay faithful, patient, and ready to celebrate the harvest God is bringing, both in the visible shoots and in the hidden roots.
Lord,
Thank You for the seeds You have planted in our lives,
in our church, and in our community.
Help us to be faithful in sowing, patient in waiting, and wise
in tending what has been entrusted to us.
Give us the strength to continue serving
and the humility to let others water alongside us.
Teach us to trust that You are the One who brings growth,
in Your timing and in Your ways - sometimes quietly beneath the surface,
sometimes in ways that surprise us.
As we step into this new season of spring,
remind us that nothing we do in faith is wasted.
May we celebrate the sprouts we see, and trust the roots that are growing unseen.
Help us to face challenges with courage, and to rejoice in the harvest You are bringing.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
